I finally got to see Cindy Cashdollar live :D
See and Christy McWilson were the "Guilty Women" with Dave Alvin at the Sellersville Theater. Hot damn, she tore it up!!!!
I'd seen Alvin a couple times (Blasters once), but this show was totally excellent. he did only 2 slow tempo songs...everything else was kickass featuring Cindy.
My friends John Train opened, so it was a good night all around

Zeke, that Cindy Cashdollar/Dave Alvin show sounds great. I'd love to see them.

I got a little, no, not so little, Louisiana fix last night. Tab Benoit in Orlando. Smokin' hot music, funny banter with the audience, great crowd, great fun. Mike Zito opened and came out with a slide for the last two songs -- "Night Train" and "We Make a Good Gumbo." That really kicked it up a notch. It was a theater venue, but I couldn't stay in my seat for that. I crawled right over the laps of eveyone in my row to get to the aisle to dance. Oooh, that felt good!

Celebrated Mardi Gras with Eric Lindell at the Jewish Mother... a kick-ass show for sure! He's hot a new band, including a sax player, and doing more jazzy, swamp-pop stuff. His new CD out shortly--the tunes have a bit of a California sound too.

Black Joe Louis & the Honeybears on Mon. night were hyped up, but 'fraid it was just that, hype...

Lotsa good stuff in the music pipeline--and it's almost March!!! Bring on the sunshine.

The new Hiatt tour is selling out everywhere; they just added a second date at the Rams Head in MD yesterday at noon... It's pricey, tho tix are already hard to come by  ; guess the economy hasn't affected everyone's purchasing choices. (I'm wondering about whether a certain drummer might get me into the show... ) Get the CD! Then keep your eyes open and JUMP the minute tix are available if you want to catch him.

And Ronnie Baker Brooks roused up all the old blues fogies at the Attucks last Friday night. Think it was 2 ovations--probly woulda been more if mgmt. hadn't turned up the houselights, lol. Plus local gal Jackie Scott (and her Housewreckers) is someone to watch, representing the Baltimore Blues Society at the IBC... 8)

Also saw Ronnie Baker Brooks on Sunday at the Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis. Didn't know how well he'd come off at a small venue (usually see him at festivals) but he managed to roam through the audience shaking hands while playing, toasting fans, etc. Besides his wonderful blues, he did his usual Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Hendricks and....some rap - and he's pretty good at that. We had a front table (and the only illuninated one) so we got plenty of personal attention :D .
He's working on a new CD with brother Wayne and dad Lonnie.

I went to the Ohio River Valley Folk Festival in Madison, IN this past Saturday and saw the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Louden Wainwright III and The Subdudes. Excellent performances by all three acts. Madison, IN puts on some very good festivals on a great river front location.

I shot a few photos and if you'd like to see them

Saw Joan Armatrading the other night at Longwood gardens (teh gardens has been putting on some good shows the last 2 years...Shemika Copeland, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi last year...Chris Issac and Macr Brousard, BB King, Rennasance and Procol harem this year). She only did one song with her 12-string...all the others here telecasters got quite a workout...she really had her R&R hat on that night. Her new songs were really good and hard edged.
Went to the Great Blue Heron festival in western NY...traveled and camped with the Slo-Mo band. Great weather. Donna the Buffalo is the big draw there.Slo-Mo and some other musicians were asked to do an impromptu jam session sat night at an out of the way stage in the woods that turned out to be the hit of the festival...Smokin' in more ways than one
and my friend Steph Hayes is back with her Good Problems band after the death of the drummer, Bobby C from Cystic Fibrosis last summer. They had an opening slot for Kaki King at the TLA in Philly and stole the show 2 months ago and Philly promoters have taken notice. Last Saturday, they blew the roof off the Grape room, and have a downstairs gig at WCL next month.
Here's a video of the Good Problems band (Bobby on drums)...the cast is an all star group of friends in the Philly music scene (backup girl singer Mia does a gig as June Carter Cash with the Johnny cash experience that willblow you away!!) Puttin' rock back into folk/rock for sure

Last Friday night, Pure Prairie League at State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. This was a seated show with a small crowd - maybe 120 people in all. Somehow we got the front center table, so we were up close. The band was great; three of the five members (Craig Fuller, Mike O'Reilly and John David Call) from the earliest years of the band, and the setlist faithfully covered all the best PPL music. For good measure, they threw in a Vince Gill tune and a Lowell George classic (Willin'). My favorite was Craig's heartfelt "Boulder Skies".

Saturday afternoon we ventured to Delaware to see Jumpin' Johnny Sansone at the Saint Georges Country Store. This was a Diamond State Blues Society event organized by Bluesgirl, and it was a delightful afternoon. The cafe seated about 40 guests, and a tasty buffet of Cajun food was served. Local musicians Billy Pierce and John DiGiovani opened the show before Johnny came out for his solo set (guitar & harmonica). The music was good and the stories were entertaining, especially Johnny's account of touring Yellowstone Park with Monk Boudreaux and his Mardi Gras Indians.

Garry Cogdell & the Complainers came on for a full-band set with Johnny picking up the accordion. Not only did the music flow, but Billy telepathically sensed when Johnny was ready for another beer. Everything meshed so well that Johnny decided they should be renamed The Mindreaders. As for the music, Johnny remarked that Billy's slide work had definite Sonny Landreth influences.

We couldn't stay for the evening show but trust that it was just as good.

I know Judy would have liked to see another show or two, but it wasn't a bad weekend.
